Safer alternatives to public chatbots
When teaching material or student work contains personal or sensitive data, prefer one of these options.
- Local LLM
- An open-weight model (for example Mistral, Llama, Qwen or Gemma) running on your own computer with tools such as Ollama, LM Studio or GPT4All. Best when the data must not leave your device.
- Institutional LLM
- A service your university runs or has contracted, with a data processing agreement and clear rules on retention and training. Ask your IT department or Data Protection Officer.
- European LLM
- A provider established in the EU that hosts data in the EU under the GDPR, for example Mistral AI, or open European models such as EuroLLM and the OpenEuroLLM project. TO VALIDATE: list of recommended providers
